Tufted Titmouse
The Tufted Titmouse is a small gray bird with a loud voice that echoes through the forest that it inhabits. They are frequent visitors to feeders. In our yard, we have the best of both worlds. With a large lot filled with trees, there is plenty of cover for the titmouse to build nests and have plenty of food in the feeders. We have a water feature in the backyard located where all the trees are maturely grown and they tend to build nests for the next generation. This fountain gives them a place to drink and bathe.
On the feeder, they will pick out a large seed, carry it to a perch and crack it open using their black stout beak. They will whack in over and over until it opens. They prefer sunflower seeds, but will eat suet, peanuts and other seeds. They are only found in the eastern to central parts of the United States.

Oh I adore these little birds who were regular visitors to our backyard! So much fun to watch.

It’s my son’s favorite birds. We have a lot of them too. They are always bouncing around the feeders, mixing with the finches and Cardinals. I actually bought my son a couple of tee-shirts with paintings of Titmouses on them (he doesn’t know yet :-). Other than the cowbirds, they are OUR most common bird too and they sing most prettily.

Thanks Margaret. There are only two version in the US. One is in the western part of the country called the Black-crested Titmouse and the one on the eastern part of the US called the Tufted Titmouse. 🙂
