This week Jim Adams has prompted us with I, Me, Them, Us, You, We for this weeks Song Lyric Sunday. I chose to feature some songs from the album “Did I Shave My Legs for This” by country music singer-songwriter Deana Carter.
“Did I Shave My Legs for This” is the debut album from Deana Carter which was released by Patriot Records in the UK in 1995, but the label went under shortly after the release. Capitol Records had Carter record new material for the North American release of the album in 1996. The album was certified 5x Multi-Platinum in the US with sales of over 5 million copies and debuted at #2 on the US Top Country Albums chart.
Carter’s big break came when one of her demo tapes landed in the hands of Willie Nelson. He invited her to perform in the 1994 Farm Aid VII concert as the shows only female soloist. The same demo tape led to her contract with Capitol Records the next year.
“Strawberry Wine” was the debut single from her newly released album and went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The song also won her a Country Music Association Award (CMA) in 1997 for Single of the Year. Carter was nominated for a Grammy that same year for Best Country Female Vocal Performance for “Strawberry Wine”.
“We Danced Anyway” and “How Do I Get There” reached #1 on the Country Charts . “Did I Shave My Legs For This” only made it to #25 and the same chart.
Strawberry Wine
He was working through college on my grandpa's farm I was thirsting for knowledge and he had a car I was caught somewhere between a woman and a child When one restless summer we found love growing wild On the banks of the river on a well beaten path It's funny how those memories they last Like strawberry wine and seventeen The hot July moon saw everything My first taste of love oh bittersweet Green on the vine Like strawberry wine I still remember when thirty was old And my biggest fear was September when he had to go A few cards and letters and one long distance call We drifted away like the leaves in the fall But year after year I come back to this place Just to remember the taste Of strawberry wine and seventeen The hot July moon saw everything My first taste of love oh bittersweet Green on the vine Like strawberry wine The fields have grown over now Years since they've seen the plow There's nothing time hasn't touched Is it really him or the loss of my innocence I've been missing so much Like strawberry wine and seventeen The hot July moon saw everything My first taste of love oh bittersweet Green on the vine Like strawberry wine Strawberry wine Strawberry wine Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Gary Harrison / Matraca Berg Strawberry Wine lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Universal Music Publishing Group
We Danced Anyway
The summer air was heavy and sweet You and I on a crowded street There was music everywhere, I can see us there In a happy little foreign town Where the stars hung upside down A half a world away, far far away I remember you were laughing We were so in love, we were so in love And the band played songs we'd never heard But we danced anyway We never understood the words We just sang oh la la la la la la la oh And we danced anyway They say you can't go back, baby I don't believe that Come along with me, come on and dance with me Maybe if I hold you close Baby we could just let go Of these things that tie us down, we'll come back around Do you remember we were laughing We were so in love, we were so in love And the band played songs we'd never heard But we danced anyway We never understood the words We just sang oh la la la la la la la la la oh And we danced anyway Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Matraca Maria Berg / Randy Scruggs We Danced Anyway lyrics © Universal Music Publishing Group, Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC
How Do I Get There
We've always been the best of friends No secrets and no demands But suddenly from somewhere out of the blue I see a different light around you One thing I haven't told you, I just want to hold you And never let you go, but I need to know How do I get there from here How do I make you see How do I tell you what my heart's been tellin' me Lost in your lovin' arms that's where I want to be You know I love you How do I get there You probably think I've lost my mind Takin' this chance and crossin' that line I promise to be truer than true Dreamin' every night with these arms around you I can't wait any longer it's only getting stronger So help me find a way How do I get there from here How do I make you see How do I tell you what my heart's been tellin' me Lost in your lovin' arms that's where I want to be You know I love you How do I get there The shortest distance between two points is a straight line But I'll climb any mountain that you want me to climb The perfect combination is your heart and mine Baby, give me a sign How do I get there from here How do I make you see How do I tell you what my heart's been tellin' me Lost in your lovin' arms that's where I want to be You know I love you How do I get there How do I get there from here How do I make you see How do I tell you what my heart's been tellin' me Lost in your lovin' arms that's where I want to be You know I love you How do I get there Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Chris Farren / Deana Kay Carter How Do I Get There lyrics © BMG Rights Management US, LLC, EMI Music Publishing
Did I Shave My Legs for This?
Flowers and wine is what I thought I would find When I came home from working tonight Well now here I stand, over this frying pan And you want a cold one again I bought these new heels, did my nails Had my hair done just right I thought this new dress was a sure bet For romance tonight Well it's perfectly clear, between the TV and beer I won't get so much as a kiss As I head for the door I turn around to be sure Did I shave my legs for this? Now when we first met you promised you'd get A house on a hill with a pool Well this trailer stays wet and were swimmin' in debt And you want me to go back to school I bought these new heels, did my nails Had my hair done just right I thought this new dress was a sure bet For romance tonight Well it's perfectly clear, between the TV and beer I won't get so much as a kiss As I head for the door I turn around to be sure Did I shave my legs for this? Darlin' did I shave my legs for this? Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Deana Kay Carter / Rhonda Hart Did I Shave My Legs For This? lyrics © Universal Music Publishing Group, Music Sales Corporation

This must have been the era when I was not listening to much country music. Thank you for sharing these – they are new to me.

Her father Fred Carter, Jr. a Nashville studio guitarist played with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. Not a bad environment to grow up in. Nice music Lisa.

Isn’t it great? Always takes me to my teenage experiences even though the song came out 10 years later. 😊
