“If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me) by the Bellamy Brothers

This week for Song Lyric Sunday, Jim Adams has prompted us with songs pertaining to Could/Might/Should/Would. We’re getting our grammar on, y’all!

David & Howard Bellamy, The Bellamy Brothers are an American Pop & Country Music Duo who hav entertained audiences all over the world for the past 40 years. They have released multiple albums in 17 countries.

The Bellamy Brothers are from Darby, Florida in Pasco County. They had their first musical gig in 1968 at a benefit concert in San Antonio, Florida at the Rattlesnake Roundup with their father who played country music around the house. Fraternity parties at the University of Florida became their first paid gigs. To hear their story, you may be interested in their book “Let Their Love Flow – The Live and Times of the Bellamy Brothers”.

“If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me” was released in March 1979 and was the second single on the album “The Two and Only”. The song was written by David Bellamy and became The Bellamy Brothers first number 1 hit on the Billboard Magazine Hot Country Singles chart and their second number one overall, after their 1976 pop hit “Let Your Love Flow” which is a great song in its own right.

On the original single, the song showed the word “Have” in the title, however on subsequent releases, the title was listed with “Had”. The change came from a Groucho Marx line that he would sometimes use while interviewing attractive female contestants on his television program “You Bet Your Life” where Marx would say to them “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body”, then shake his cigar & raise his eyebrows to elicit a reaction. Of course today, the show would be cancelled and Marx would be sued for sexual harassment.

In an issue in 2003, Country Weekly magazine named “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me” the number 1 country pick-up line of all time. Took them long enough to decided that. It was the #1 pick up line in the 80’s when I was a teenager moving into adulthood. I know, I lived it!

If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
If I swore you were an angel,
Would you treat me like the devil tonight
If I were dying of thirst
Would your flowing love come quench me
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
Now we can talk all night about the weather
Tell you 'bout my friends out on the coast
I could ask a lot of crazy questions
Or I could ask what I really want to know
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
If I swore you were an angel,
Would you treat me like the devil tonight
If I were dying of thirst
Would your flowing love come quench me
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
The rain can fall so soft against the window
The sun can shine so bright up in the sky
But daddy always told me, "Don't make small talk"
He said, "Come on out and say what's on your mind"
So if I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
If I swore you were an angel,
Would you treat me like the devil tonight
If I were dying of thirst
Would your flowing love come quench me
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me
If I swore you were an angel,
Would you treat me like the devil tonight

I remember this track, certainly from the radio at the time, but I think it was on the first album I ever bought (which was a compilation called Night Moves).

That is certainly a probability. It played at the roller rink a lot when I was in 8th & 9th grade. Living in Florida, I’ve been around all the places they grew up. Not too far from Tampa, but definitely in the country.

Small world, I almost ended up in Tampa. It was back in the days of Chase.

I lived there for 21 years but have been in Jacksonville for 12 years now. We go back often as 2 of my kids & grandkids live there.

My first experience was up in Va, it was very suburbs and I didn’t like it much, having to get into a car to go anywhere. But the plan changed to move to Fl, which I loved. It was nice to go out to Ybor in particular.

How long ago were you in Ybor? It has changed so much in the past 20 years. I have some old images of Ybor in my Tampa book.

We never got past the hotel in Tampa, although for a long time the plan was to set up there, we looked at apartments etc. We were in a joint venture with Chase so the plan was to be near their campus in Tampa, until they decided they wanted us to be in NYC instead. I didn’t mind as I loved the compactness of NYC – it was just that spread-outness around DC I didn’t like. Ironically, when my visa finally came through, I said “no” to the job – and, I ended up in a small village over here!

It’s too hot & humid for me down south now but I endure it in the summer months for birthdays. At least we get cooler weather in the fall & spring here in Jax. 😊

Darby, Florida is just on the other side of the Green Swamp from me. I never heard this song, but I have listened to the Bellamy Brothers doing Let Your Love Flow. I love the slide guitar in this song. I thought the video was fun to watch especially at the end when they ask the audience to sing along and nobody seems to know the words. Thanks for adding this Lisa.

I remember this song well. You’ve got to admit it’s a pickup line worthy of consideration 🙂

I also played in a band at frat gigs at U of F. I guess we would have been more successful if we went country like this.

Horns as in brass instruments or horns as on top of your head? Awe, the visuals.

I played trombone . Does that answer your question?

Sure does. I played the French horn in high school. Never thought to start a rock band.
